I am King Charlemagne's arrogant nephew. I'm boastful and proud. These qualities have led me into a bloody battle in Gascony, France, destroying a large part of the King's army. Death seems eminent.

I knew I wasn't in the US when January was described as hot and sweltering. Mawson, Australia may be where the protagonist lives but he has spent all his life romanticizing Staplefield, West Sussex in Endland, the home of his overprotective and secretive mother. But I have a feeling there is something strange about about to happen in Staplefield.

I am in Northern California, along the coast. There is a home that has been mistakenly taken away from a depressed and deserted woman and auctioned to an Eastern Indian immigrant trying to regain his self worth. It doesn't end well(from what I've heard).

I am on an idyllic island in the southeast of Canada, Prince Edward Island, or PEI to fans. Though it is best known for a spunky inhabitant by the name of Anne Shirley, I am visiting with some lesser known characters. Only L.M. Montgomery can people her island with so much flair.

I have settled in Chicago where I work at the Newberry Library but I make occasional trips to New Haven, Michigan to meet my future bride. I have more trouble answering the question of when am I since I jump from past to future to present without warning.

This week I am in the bizarre 5th Avenue home of a couple of brothers, one blind and one genius/eccentric. We are moving from about the 1920s to close to modern day. There are wars, gangsters, hippies and more newspapers than can fit into one house.

This week I am enjoying a view of life in the nunnery in Ferrara, Italy in 1570 where daughters were sold, often against there wills, to convents because the expenses of a wedding dowry were too high. The politics inside the confining walls are as fascinating as the characters who live within.

I am in the small village of Ballyroan, Ireland in the 1950s and 1960s. I am the younger daughter of some of the remaining villagers after a mass exodus from Ireland, just before the country was rigged with electricity. There is a group of gypsies that my sister and I keep running into.

There are no good photos of Ballyroan, Ireland so I got this one of its neighbor, Galway.

I'm back in Alabama in the 1930s. This week I'm a young girl from a mining community who witnesses a lady drop a baby in a well. I will spend the rest of the book dealing with the impact of this event.

I'll be spending some time in Venice, Italy today as I follow Antonia, a merchant of Venice, in about the 1500s. The language is a challenge that is well worth the time taken to understand it.

Today I am in Alabama, USA. It's in about the 1930s in a little town called Whistle Stop with a charming cafe run by some eccentric characters. They serve traditional foods from the south, including fried green tomatoes.

Today I am in Virginia, USA. It's the 1950s and life in a seemingly happy home is not what it appears. Dark secrets are held here that will affect its 5 year old occupant for the rest of his life; secrets that will cause him to write this memoir and then to write the wonderful novel, A Reliable Wife.
