R.I.P. II Challenge

It's here! It's here!

The R.I.P. II Autumn Reading Challenge is just around the corner. It runs from Sept 1st through Oct. 31st. I encourage you to go here to find out more. No one says it better than Carl V.

There are several Perils to choose from for this reading challenge and each one I read sounded like the one for me. I want to do either Peril 1, 2, or 3. I simply can't make up my mind so I'm not going to. With the start of school in Sept. I just don't know how my reading opportunities will present themselves so I will make an open ended list. Here are qualifying books from the stacks:

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson (256 pg)
The Woman in White by Wilie Collins (622 pg)
The Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux (322 pg)
The Complete Stories by Egdar Allen Poe (955 pg)
Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell by Susanna Clarke (846 pg)
A Fine and Private Place by Peter S. Beagle (272 pg)(the author that wrote The Last Unicorn also wrote this story about a man living in a cemetery and his friends who are ghosts)
The Tales of Hoffmann by E. T. A. Hoffmann (341 pg)(a contemporary of Poe, he also wrote strange and scary tales)

I listed their number of pages so you could see that choosing will be no easy task as books are either big or REALLY big. I will commit to Jonathan Strange and The Phantom for now but we will have to see what else I can fit in when the time comes. Thanks Carl for hosting what promises to be another R.I.P.ping good challenge.

Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell is SUCH a great book! I really hope you enjoy it! I love Peter Beagle, but haven't read A Fine and Private Place. Looking forward to your thoughts on that one...it sounds great. I'm reading Tamsin by him for this challenge. Great list!

What a great list, Petunia! I am also reading "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde", and I seriously considered adding "A Fine and Private Place". It's my priority to add as a bonus if I have the time.

Love your list, Petunia! Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell is a fantastic book, and I'm very tempted to read it again soon...maybe before Christmas if the rest of my reading goes according to plan! Will look forward to seeing what you think of it!

I love Peter S. Beagle's work, but like Chris, I haven't read A Fine and Private Place. Another one for the "to read" list...I can sense that this challenge will be as dangerous as the Once Upon a Time challenge was!

Wow! Great list with some BIG books!! I read Dr. Jekyll, but that's the only one. One of these days I'll get to Jonathan Strange. It's on my list of additions, though I probably won't get to it until later!!

Isn't this going to be fun!!

Gah! You just reminded me that I totally forgot The Phantom of the Opera, and it was high on my list! Oh well, I'll just have to skip it this time around.

Great list you have there. They look yummy!

If you like The Phantom of the Opera, well, even if you don't, I suggest checking out "Phantom" by Susan Kay. It retells the Phantoms entire life and I found it very good when I read it last year.

Good luck on the challenge!

That's a great list, Petunia! I wasn't familiar with Peter Beagle's book, but it sounds really interesting. I'm looking forward to your reviews.

Wow! Look at all the comments.

Chris-I haven't read Tamsin but if I like Private Place as much as I liked The Last Unicorn then I'll be working my way through all Beagle's works.

Nymeth-I've always wanted to read Dr. Jekyll but this seems like the perfect oppertunity to get it under my belt.

Quixotic-Carl's challenges are the best. He has such a motivating way about him.

Stephanie-All these big books scare me a bit but I'll give it my best shot. I'm excited!

Andi-I've been wanting to read it all year but I saved it especially for this challenge. I loved the movie so I look forward to the book.

Nicola-I hope I love it as much as you do.

Kailana-thanks for the recommend. I will check if my library has it.

Court-me too. Everyone else seems to agree so I look forward to reading them.

Phantom is so creepy!!

Woman in White seems long, but I think it was one of my fastest reads of the year. And it was very rewarding. :)

A Fine and Private Place sounds interesting.

Oh, and I also loved Jonathon Strange, though I don't think it was creepy.

I'm so excited about this challenge-almost everyone is doing it! :D

Good to know that Woman in White is so rewarding. I would love to read all the books I've listed but I'll be happy just to finish one. Last year I made a list and never read anything.

Dangit! Everyone is doing this one and I really can't do any more challenges, but Dangit! :) Great list. I just picked up Phantom at a book sale, but probably won't read it for a while...

With the benefit of many reviews, this is the perfect opportunity to gather titles for the TBR list Trish.
